MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY AND CHRISTIANS

God's heart breaks over poverty and injustice, yet nearly half of the world still lives in poverty. The gap between the world's richest and poorest people is wider than ever.

Tearfund, who we support as a church, have a track record of campaigning on debt, trade and aid through Jubilee2000 & Jubilee Debt Campaign, the Trade Justice Movement and the 0.7 aid campaigns.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY provides support for the next important stage of this work.

2005 offers a unique opportunity to influence governments, not just on Trade, Debt and Aid but on key concerns to Tearfund and its Christian partners, such as climate change, water & sanitation and HIV/AIDS.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY provides all the church members as individuals and as a fellowship the opportunity to do God's work in raising your voices against the injustice of the world.

With 2.8 billion people living in poverty
in our world today, something has to change.

That’s why Tearfund is campaigning as part of Make Poverty History, a coalition of over 200 organisations, to call for change in the areas of international trade, aid and debt.

Make Poverty History and Tearfund

Tearfund has joined with scores of charities, church organisations and campaigning groups to form Make Poverty History to ask the UK government to act for the benefit of poor people during 2005.

"The Lord upholds the caused of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry"
(Psalm 146v7)

What is the Biblical context for involvement.

God created the earth and everything in it.  He is intimately concerned with what happens to the creation that continues to depend upon Him for existence.

God chose to focus the meaning and history of the earth in people, the dominant species
that He created.

Very early in human history people chose to reject God's authority. Ever since our history has been dominated by violence and destructive exploitation of each other and the rest of creation.

But running in parallel with this sad human story is the story of God's plan to redeem human beings
 and restore the earth.

The story is summed up in Jesus Christ who through His life , death and resurrection opened the way to a better life through restored relationship with God.

As the Holy Spirit works in and thorough communities of Jesus Christ's disciples , true peace,
justice and prosperity - the qualities of Jesus'' rule - became a foretaste of what is to come in
the new heaven and earth.
