What is the SEN register?

Each school is required to keep a confidential register or list of all children who have special educational needs.

What is meant by special needs?

This means children who need extra help, support or extending in areas of learning.

The register helps school to plan how it will support learning and review the progress of individual children regularly.

Some children will be on the register for just a short time; others may need learning support throughout their time in school. One in five children will have special educational needs at some point, so as a parent or carer you are not alone.

Who should I talk to about my child’s learning?

Your child’s class teacher will talk to you about your child’s educational needs and how school will support them.
Our school uses a range support strategies to help and support children who are experiencing difficulties.
Our school has a member of staff with responsibility for coordinating arrangements for learning support. He or she is referred to as the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO)

Will my views count?

Our school welcomes constructive discussion with parents and understands you may be anxious when concerns are raised about your child’s education.
As a parent your contributions are invaluable. A partnership between school and parents is vital and benefits everyone.
In supporting your child’s learning, staff may discuss how you can provide support at home.
