It is essential for
the school to know the reason for every absence, as under current
legislation we now have to distinguish in the register between absences
allowed by law and those which are not. An explanatory note is required on
the child's return to school.
Apart from
sickness, authorised absence can include, for example, medical
appointments, a domestic crisis, such as the death of a close relative,
severe weather preventing travel to school, or a holiday, for which school
permission has been sought in advance.
If your child has
to be absent for only part of a school day, e.g. for a medical
appointment, please let us know in advance the time when he or she will be
collected, and whether a school meal will be required.
It
is to your child's advantage that family holidays take place in the school
holidays to avoid upsetting the continuity of learning. Only in
exceptional circumstances can absence due to a family holiday be allowed,
for no more than two weeks in any year. This is not an automatic legal
right.
