Reading Club

A new addition to the extra-curricular activities at South Wilford School is a Book Club for year 5/6 children.  At present the children who have been invited are the ‘book worms’ of the school and those who appreciate and are willing to try a wider variety of texts.

National Literacy Trust

The children meet along with Mrs Wakefield and Mrs Fearn, fortnightly, often over a buffet lunch, to discuss the book that they have read over the previous couple of weeks.  One aim is to try to broaden the type of books that they are exposed to particularly story lines with wider social and cross-cultural issues.

These have included stories about the Foot and Mouth crisis, Asylum seekers and issues relating to families in times of stress and difficulty.

So far the children have read a wide range of texts and authors including Michael Morpurgo, Tim Bowler and Beverly Naidoo.  They have stunned the adults with their depth of understanding and ability to articulate their views.

It is hoped that the children involved will eventually feel confident enough to lead a book club of their own in the future and continue to be avid, versatile readers.
